RTO (Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer) systems are being introduced at MHF sites to reduce heavy slag and temperatures. They help address EPA regulatory issues without losing valuable hearth capacity with a Zero Hearth. RTO systems can help to reduce emissions, including CO and NOx. Some systems have been guaranteed to reduce CO emissions emanating from Buyer's process by more than 95%.

Attached is a paper by Stan Chilson, PE and Senior Project Manager from GHD. The paper titled, "Two-Stage Thermal oxidization: A Cost-Effective, Environmentally Sound Alternative for BioEnergy Recovery from Multiple Hearth Furnaces" discusses energy recovery using a thermal oxidization system with a Multiple Hearth Furnace (MHF) at a plant in Pennsylvania.
